Wellness at Sea Conference 2017

The interactive panel debate focused on lessons learned on Wellness at Sea and the steps to take now and in the future.

The Society’s first Wellness at Sea Conference took place at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore on 17 January, with experts from across the world of maritime and medicine discussing issues which can affect seafarers’ health and wellbeing, along with practical solutions.

Delegates heard talks about the actual cost of investing in crew welfare versus the cost of dealing with the consequences. They heard about the research studies currently being developed by Yale University alongside the Society's Wellness programme and discussed the apparent lack of real, current data on seafarers' wellbeing. There were also interesting presentations on the impact of communications on crew welfare and how the Society has helped put seafarers’ on board health and wellbeing in their own hands through the Wellness at Sea app.

There was a real sense of positivity among the delegates in the room, and a genuine willingness to pull together and ensure that the discussions of the day were the beginning of a movement towards ensuring the health and wellness of seafarers in the future.

Summing up the day, Sailors’ Society CEO Stuart Rivers said: "If we work together and share data, I believe we can significantly improve the wellness of all seafarers. It is up to us to ensure this happens."

Discussions carried on into the evening over drinks by the waterfront. It was a super, positive day, which was undoubtedly a resounding success. The event wouldn’t have been possible without sponsors Inmarsat, Dorian LPG and Thome Group, and we are grateful to them for their support.
