Thieves target new Salisbury charity shop

6 Jul, 2017

A new charity shop on Catherine Street, which raises money for the world’s seafarers, was broken into by thieves last night (Wednesday July 5).

The shop, run by international maritime charity Sailors’ Society, was targeted overnight with money stolen from a charity box and damage done to the door and window.

Sailors’ Society’s south coast retail manager, Paul Long-Collins, said, “We don’t keep cash on site overnight, so they’ve only managed to steal loose change.

“However, until we can get things tidied up, the charity will suffer from loss of trade and the staff and volunteers who found the mess have been left pretty upset.”

The shop only opened on June 2 but has already gained support from the local community and is the second of four new shops the charity plans to roll out this year, with others due to open in Southampton and Poole. It already has shops in Farnborough and Aberdeen as well as the one in Eastleigh.

Sailors’ Society’s director of development, Adam Stacey, said: “It’s a real shame that this has happened. The Salisbury shop is a vital way for us to diversify our income so that, even in these challenging financial times, we can continue the work we do supporting hundreds of thousands of seafarers in need around the world.”

If you have any unwanted goods and would like to support Sailors’ Society’s Salisbury shop, you can make donations at 17-19 Catherine Street.
