Giving seafaring families a better future

Seafarers can be away from home for up to a year at a time, which can have a huge impact on the families they leave behind. Families can face a high risk of poverty as a result of strained relationships and poor support systems, especially in the Philippines, where seafaring is a major source of employment.

Sailors’ Society has been providing family and community outreach projects in the Philippines since 2014.

We currently have five Seafarers’ Pupil’s Clubs, three based in Cebu Province, one based in Tacloban and one in Borongan, all of them equipping seafarers’ children with important life skills.

Until recently, we ran a Seafarers’ Family Association which aimed to give seafarers’ spouses opportunities to improve their education, financial management and income. In light of the pandemic and changing needs this has since been replaced by our family resiliency, stress management and mental health workshops, which we run through our Wellness at Home work.
