A five-year old Aldershot school girl has run 1km and raised more than £250 for a charity supporting seafarers and their families in need.
Audrey Childs took part in the 1km Barfield Bolt, a charity fun run organised by Barfield School in Farnham, on Saturday 10 June to raise funds for Sailors’ Society. At just five years old, Audrey is currently the global maritime welfare charity’s youngest supporter.
Harriet Childs, Audrey’s mother said, “I am so unbelievably proud of her. Running 1km without stopping and raising money for such a great cause is an amazing achievement. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored her!”
Audrey chose to support Sailors' Society because, as a keen sailor herself, she wanted to help seafarers and their families when they are in trouble. Audrey also regularly visits Sailors’ Society’s charity shop in North Camp, Farnborough, to donate her toys and buy new goods in return.
Harriet continued, “We sail together as a family and often pop to Sailors’ Society’s charity shop in North Camp, so when I asked Audrey which charity she would like to run for, Sailors’ Society was the first one that came into her mind.”
Audrey trained hard for her run, with the whole family going out on practice jogs to get in shape for the challenge. There is still time to make a donation to Audrey’s appeal by visiting: https://www.justgiving.com/AudreyChilds
Stuart Rivers, Sailors’ Society’s chief executive officer, said, “We were so impressed when we heard about Audrey’s amazing achievement.
“The money she has raised will help us do more for seafarers and their families around the world – like the school we are funding in Ghana which will give more opportunities for children of seafarers there.
”We hope Audrey will inspire people of all ages to get involved with the charity and have some fun!”
