Les’ supermarket sweep

24 Jan, 2019

A Hampshire-based maritime charity has benefited from the generosity of Fareham’s Poundland, after the store donated more than 60 boxes of excess stock to its cause on Tuesday (22 January).

Gosport fundraising champion, Les Heyhoe, who collected the items; such as Christmas decorations and fancy dress costumes, was delighted with the haul, which will go to Sailors’ Society’s charity shops.

He said, “We’re really grateful to Mark and the team at Poundland for their generosity.

“The money raised from the sales of these items will go a long way to helping seafarers around the world.”

Sailors’ Society works internationally to provide practical, emotional and spiritual welfare support to the world’s 1.6m seafarers, regardless of background or faith.

The charity’s chaplains and ship visitors have a presence in 96 global ports, with wider projects and services covering 30 countries.

Store manager, Mark Pearce, said, “It’s great to know that Sailors’ Society will put these donations to good use at their charity shops.”

Les added, “I’d love to hear from any shops or community groups that would like to support Sailors’ Society’s work.”

Les’ next Sailors’ Society event is an abseil down the Spinnaker Tower on 27 July.
