Portsmouth South MP wishes Hampshire maritime charity happy birthday

29 Jan, 2018

Stephen Morgan MP wished Hampshire-based maritime charity Sailors’ Society a happy 200th birthday at Westminster.

The Portsmouth South MP said: “It was great to meet with Sailors’ Society to hear about all the fantastic work they do for seafarers across the globe. I wish them a very happy birthday and look forward to working closely with them in the future.”

Sailors’ Society’s advocacy manager Jon Foster said: “MPs have a long history of supporting the charity’s work. With seafaring such a crucial part of Portsmouth’s heritage and economy we are grateful to Stephen for continuing this tradition as we approach our bicentenary.”

The organisation was founded on 18 March 1818 to minister to the needs of destitute seafarers returning home from the Napoleonic Wars.

Sailors’ Society, which is based in Southampton, now works in 29 countries around the world.

It aims to transform the lives of seafarers and their families at home, in port and at sea through the delivery of chaplaincy, education and the relief of poverty and distress.
