Pacific Basin and Sailors’ Society celebrate 10-year partnership

This year marks the anniversary of a decade-long partnership between Pacific Basin Shipping and maritime welfare charity, Sailors’ Society, which has given help to thousands of seafarers in need.

Pacific Basin, one of the world's leading owners and operators of Handysize and Supramax dry bulk ships, has raised more than US$300,000 (GB£230,000) for Sailors’ Society since the charity partnership began in 2006.

P.B. Subbiah, director of human resources and administration at Pacific Basin, said: “Pacific Basin has been a strong supporter of Sailors’ Society for 10 years now. The simple reason we do it is to show our gratitude to the thousands of seafarers who sacrifice months away from their loved ones to keep the world of international trade turning.

“The outreach work that Sailors’ Society does for seafarers is indispensable. With its ever-widening network of port chaplains, Sailors’ Society ensures that seafarers are never far away from a helping hand, a comforting hug or someone to talk to. Even in these tough markets, we are happy to support the Society in whatever way we can.”

In the past five years alone, Pacific Basin has generated more than US$210,000 (GB£160,000) for Sailors’ Society through a combination of sponsoring dinners, undertaking challenge events, including the biennial Asian Challenge, and project funding.

A key, ongoing element of the partnership is the sponsorship of a minibus which provides vital free transport for visiting seafarers in the bustling port of Manila, a base for one of Pacific Basin’s 12 offices.

With the fast turnaround times of modern ships in port, it can be difficult for seafarers to leave ship and access local amenities. The minibus enables Sailors’ Society’s port chaplain, Nic Tuban, to visit ships and provide help to seafarers on board, as well to offer free transport to internet cafes, shops and healthcare. Nic also uses the minibus to travel and offer crucial welfare support to local seafaring communities in times of distress. Prominently branded with Pacific Basin’s logo and contact details, the company has benefited from positive association.

Claire Heath, Sailors’ Society’s partnerships development manager said: “Pacific Basin has been a true champion of our cause and we are incredibly grateful for its support. We look forward to continuing our mutually beneficial partnership, bringing relief to seafaring communities in need for many years to come.”
