Support To Seafarers

Our Chaplains provide pastoral, spiritual and practical support. Their role is to deliver ministry, welfare and mission to merchant seafarers.

Our Chaplains' purpose is to talk with the men and women onboard ship or ashore and to unconditionally help them, to be there for the merchant seafarers who need them.

Our Chaplains can be advisors to seafarers who seek their help in all areas of practical, moral, ethical and spiritual matters. They have opportunity to meet with, mix with and talk to seafarers from a variety of nations, backgrounds and faiths – or of no faith – believers or non-believers. They are also comfortable working with dependents of seafarers, who might never have been to chapel or church yet who have a deep need for someone impartial whom they can confide in if they encounter difficulties when their seafarer is far away from home.

Chaplains have a unique opportunity to be a role model of what a real Christian is all about. He or she is a ‘visible reminder of the Holy presence of God’. Our Chaplains bring that presence with them to seafarers on the deck where they stand, or in the facility ashore.

The mission of our Chaplains is clear: to care for the spiritual wellbeing of seafarers and their families, to provide for the free exercise of religion of all persons, and to offer moral, spiritual, and pastoral support. They are able to offer that care and counselling, provide Christian education and discipleship, perform weddings if ordained, minister to the sick and injured, bury the dead and bring comfort to the bereaved.

In the words of a Chaplain,

“My vision for my service to seafarers is that I come along to help the seafarer and I represent Jesus in my ministry. He carries me through my work as I visit the ships. I bring Jesus into these situations with me, not necessarily to preach but to bring, through my presence and service in His name, something of his love, something of his compassion, something of his understanding and through my work I uphold up the cross”.
