Sea Sunday

The Annual Sea Sunday Service

Sea Sunday is the Special Day that Churches around the world come together in spirit to remember merchant seafarers, to pray and give thanks for the important work they do.

The second Sunday of July of each year is designated ‘Sea Sunday’ by the many Maritime Mission Societies of the world. The occasion provides the opportunity for churches and their congregations to give thanks to God for the 1.2million merchant seafarers of the world and celebrate their work, reflect upon the issues that they face daily and to be reminded of the ministry that Port Chaplains provide every day visiting ships as they arrive in port and attending to the needs of the crew.

It may be that you cannot hold your Sea Sunday service on 8th July this year. However, there is no difficulty in your church having its Sea Sunday service on any of the other 51 Sundays in the year.  Our Sea Sunday resources are not date specific and have been designed to be adaptable to any date and style of service, whether on a Sunday or mid-week.Our supporting Churches really welcome this special opportunity, as part of their regular Sunday worship, to make time to remember merchant seafarers and the ministry that our Society provides in offering practical and pastoral care to all seafarers in need, regardless of rank, nationality, race, colour or religion.

WORSHIP RESOURCES

If you are reading this it is because you are looking for resources to help you remember seafarers and our Society's ministry to them in your Sea Sunday service. We are so thankful for your search and are sure that you will find everything below to inspire you as you prepare your worship service.

This year’s Worship Resources include a recording of a new worship song composed by Graham Kendrick in support for the Sailors' Society and dedicated to the world's 1.2 million seafarers. Words, Music Manuscript and Chord Chart are all included in the resources available below.  Also included is a Recorded Interview with Graham explaining how the ministry of our Port Chaplains and the experience of Seafarers touched his heart and resulted in him re-setting the traditional hymn,  'O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus.'  Adrian Plass has recorded a powerful Moment of Reflection based on Radio 4's Shipping Forecast.  As in previous years, the resources contain a Selection of Hymns and Prayers, a Children’s Talk, Sermon Outline and Service Outline. For the first time this year we have provided a seven day Prayer Resource making it possible for individuals to pray meaningfully for some of our Port Chaplains during the week leading up to Sea Sunday.  Our Sea Sunday 2011 presentation remains to be available below as an additional resource.

Please do not hesitate to call Ann on 023 8051 5967 or Mark on 07946 929690 if you have any queries regarding Sea Sunday, or email us.

NB The backing track for 'O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus' can be purchased via iTunes.
