Community Relations

Developing our Community and Church Relations

Building lasting relationships in the community and the church

The effectiveness of our mission in the community is dependent on the depth of our roots in society. We want to strengthen, renew and grow interest among churches and community groups.

Does your church want to help us transform the shipping community too?

In each generation new contacts must be made, new relationships established and our existing connections strengthened so that the life of the merchant seafarer and the work that we in the Sailors’ Society do to support them in their hour of need is recognised and valued.

Many church congregations commit to become supporters of the seafaring profession. They pledge to assist us in our work through prayer, sharing stories of the mariner’s difficult life at sea, telling others about our mission and the vital work that we do in God’s name, and hold special services such as ‘Sea Sunday’ to thank God for seafarers.

To this end, our Community Relations Coordinator, Reverend Mark Warner, works with our chaplaincy team in the UK to promote the work of our Society and to show how we play a unique role in the fulfillment of Christ’s commission to reach all people with his compassion. He will be pleased to visit you.

We truly value the support of faith-based communities who assist our mission. We can help your church or community group share in this special maritime ministry and can provide worship resources for faith communities.

Mark Warner is available to support you in promoting our ministry to seafarers and will be pleased to discuss how you can include seafarers in your prayer or celebration in any number of ways such as:

  • Celebrating Sea Sunday, including preaching and presentation (usually in July each year, but this can be on a day of your choosing to suit your own calendar of events)
  • Preaching at your Harvest Festival service
  • Speaking at Churches Together
  • Giving a presentation of our cause and our work at a Mid-week meeting
  • Presenting our work to you at a Men’s breakfast meeting
  • Attending Ministers’ fraternal — local or regional
  • Visiting theological colleges, Cell groups, Church away days/weekends and retreats
  • Attending local, regional, or national conferences and seminars
  • Producing Bible-study material
  • Submitting Articles for publication in your church and community group magazine or web.
