Voluntary contribution - Why we need and appreciate Volunteers
Volunteers bring valuable experience of life to our charity and are an invaluable resource for the Society. Volunteers champion our cause and often challenge opinions and perspectives whilst demonstrating loyalty and commitment to our charity’s mission to enrich seafarers’ lives and enhance their wellbeing.
The Sailors’ Society’s amazing record of achievement in supporting seafarers throughout nearly two hundred years of existence is testament to the many thousands of supporters who voluntarily give so generously, especially of their time.
The contribution of volunteers spans the entire charity. Our Trustee Board, the ruling body that controls the strategic direction of the charity and its financial accountability, is made up entirely of volunteers. Many thousands more volunteers are the bedrock of the vital income raised through our retail and community fundraising activity. Yet more assist us in so many practical ways from being members of our Guild in the community, helping with sorting and packaging goods and presents for seafarers, stuffing envelopes for mail shots through to supporting fundraising events, providing logistical backup during marathons and fundraising challenges, assisting as ushers at our church services and even supporting our Chaplains on ship visits.
At the Sailors’ Society we fully recognise that volunteering must benefit the individual as well as our charity and we aim to provide an environment that is inclusive, stimulating, friendly and supportive.
