Onboard Ship

Webships – An unusual but fascinating Classroom Project

Students – share what life is like on a ship at sea without getting wet!

The idea is simple; the results are often fascinating...

We feel that it is important to engage with schools to help raise the profile of the maritime sector and revive an understanding of its importance to all our lives – economically, environmentally, socially and for work and career purposes.

Through these freely accessible pages you can trace the progress and onboard happenings of several merchant ships. This is done by means of regular email dispatches direct from the ship together with photographs taken onboard. The material covered includes factual data; the location of the ship; places visited; meteorological information etc.

You are also introduced to members of the crew who tell what life is really like on a merchant ship and what they get up to on a daily basis in their work. The material provides a unique insight into contemporary life at sea and offers personal development opportunities for young people. In short, you can get to understand what life is like at sea ... without getting wet!

Ship's Diary

The team onboard the ship send back regular reports by email. These are collated to form a diary of life at sea onboard the vessel.

The ship’s Captain, his officers and crew report on factual information – for example, places visited and passed; seabirds and wildlife seen, meteorological conditions experienced and a general update on shipboard life.

The aim of this project is to provide an insight into the role of merchant seafarers and contemporary life at sea, within a Key Stage 3 and 4 National Curriculum supporting Geography framework.
