Who Are The Sailors' Society?

The Sailors’ Society provides a personal lifeline for seafarers on board ship and when they step ashore

We are an international support charity. We care for the personal, professional and spiritual needs of merchant mariners around the globe. We work in many countries to assist multinational seafarers of all faiths and none, to enrich and enhance their well-being, both in port and whilst away at sea.

Our Christian Chaplains visit thousands of ships in port every year and are often the first to notice when all is not well with an individual on board. They know how to lend a sympathetic ear – listening to the wants and understanding the needs of seafarers – bringing that touch of humanity, friendship and relief from the harsh environment, loneliness and isolation that comes with long months of separation from family and loved ones whilst serving at sea.

As part of its round-the-clock mission, the Sailors’ Society provides a wide spectrum of support services. Through our network of Chaplains, Seafarers’ Clubs and Seafarers’ Centres, the Sailors’ Society offers seafarers practical help, personal welfare and pastoral support and we assist them with family liaison, facilitating communication with their loved ones waiting at home.

We provide financial assistance to help those seafarers and ex-seafarers facing poverty through no fault of their own and we also grant funds to support maritime and pastoral education. We provide reassuring support and skilled counselling when tragedy strikes a seafarer, and we offer a welcoming ‘home from home’ in our facilities ashore.

Reaching out to crewmembers of all ranks, without distinction for faith, denomination, ethnic background, nationality or gender, our Chaplains offer a friendly presence, unconditionally greeting seafarers where they meet them and dealing with their personal needs whenever possible and affordable.

We pride ourselves on engaging with seafarers in any way we can, with our Chaplains often going that extra mile to meet their needs. Our people enjoy a special trusted status with seafarers the world over and whilst remaining impartial, above all else our vision is to help replace seafarers’ isolation with a sense of belonging.

We rely heavily upon on voluntary giving from the public and receipt of regular donations to ensure that we can continue our vital work. Without this crucial assistance, we would not be able to provide the range of services that we do.
