Charitable Expenditure - How we spend the money we raise
In the calendar year 2009 we spent £2.45 million on all our charitable activity. This included operating Sir Gabriel Wood’s Mariners’ Home, our care home for retired seafarers in Greenock at the cost of £1,146,000.
We spent £1.28 million on our direct charitable activity supporting working seafarers.
The main areas of expenditure were:
- sustaining the ship visiting activity of our Chaplains in their assigned ports (£650,000)
- the running costs of Seafarers’ Clubs and Centres (£533,000)
- contributions to partner organisations to assist in their work on seafarers welfare and supporting our subsidiary charities in the group (£72,000)
- providing emergency welfare grants to seafarers and granting funds to support the nautical education of aspiring seafarers (£23,000)
We also expended £130,000 on capital items to assist our service delivery to seafarers. This included provision of new vehicles, equipment and improvements to property.
